Here is everything you need to know!
Enjoying sunshine all year round, living by the sea in a beautiful setting and building a fulfilling career are all very real possibilities in Mauritius. With recent measures introduced by the government, settling here has become even more accessible for foreigners.
Get permanent residency by purchasing a property
There are several ways for a foreigner to obtain permanent residency. Since September 2020, buying property has become one of the most straightforward routes.
The minimum investment has been lowered. To qualify for permanent residency, a foreign buyer now needs to invest at least three hundred seventy five thousand dollars or the equivalent in euros instead of the previous five hundred thousand. The purchase can be made under the IRS, PDS, RES or Smart City schemes and can be done individually or through a company. The permit remains valid as long as the investor owns the eligible property. With a single real estate purchase, you gain access to an exceptional lifestyle in Mauritius with no time limit and the ability to build the future you want.
Mauritius also offers the VEFA system, allowing investors to buy off plan. This legal framework lets you purchase a property that is not yet completed, while enjoying secure protection through strict regulations.
Key point to remember: Your permanent residency is guaranteed as long as you keep your property.
Residents over 50 can also obtain a residency permit
Retirees aged fifty or over can settle in Mauritius by applying for a ten year renewable residence permit. The requirement is simple. A monthly transfer of one thousand five hundred dollars or an annual transfer of eighteen thousand dollars to a Mauritian bank account. Recent updates have made the criteria even lighter, allowing retirees to enjoy life in Mauritius with peace of mind for a full decade.
Key point to remember: Mauritius is an easy and welcoming destination for a peaceful retirement.
Family members of a residency permit holder are also eligible
The Mauritian government aims to make it easy for families to stay together. If you hold a retirement permit, a work permit or permanent residency, your loved ones can also join you. Eligible family members include your children, parents, spouse or civil partner, stepchildren and adopted children under twenty four. Your spouse will also be allowed to work in Mauritius once they obtain a work permit, an Occupation Permit or any other required authorisation. This makes the move even more appealing, as your family can visit or live with you without restrictions.
Key point to remember: Your family can join you and enjoy the same residency framework.
Residency duration extended from ten to twenty years
Permanent residency can now be extended up to twenty years instead of ten. Holders of an Occupation Permit or residence permit who have lived in Mauritius for three consecutive years can apply. This measure gives long term residents better visibility and the reassurance they need to plan ahead, invest and build a future with confidence.
Key point to remember: Longer stability for those who have made Mauritius their home.
